These spaces which are filled with air sometimes hang down. Therefore, the amount of bone available in our upper jaw decreases. When patients do not want to use removable prostheses or we need to make implants due to tooth loss, the bone insufficiency here prevents implant applications. With the sinus lifting technique, the sinus floor is slightly lifted with surgical applications. This way, the necessary volume for the implant to be applied is provided.

There are two types of sinus lifting:

Open sinus lifting technique

Closed sinus lifting technique

Open sinus lifting technique

This technique is applied if the patient’s own bone level is below 4 mm. The gums are removed under local anesthesia. A window is opened in the jawbone and lifting process is performed from this window in a way that does not damage the membrane at the sinus floor. A bone graft is applied between the membrane, which is removed very precisely, and this area is closed and sutured. A period of 6 months should be waited for the bone graft to completely ossify.

Closed sinus lifting technique

This technique is applied if the patient’s own bone level is more than 4-5 mm. In instruments called osteotomes, the sinus floor is carefully removed. The required volume is gained. Implant application is usually performed in the same session with this technique.

What are some things to consider after sinus lifting?

– The tampon placed by the dentist should remain in the mouth for 20 minutes.

– Very hot and hard foods should be avoided, and softer, warmer and liquid foods should be preferred.

– Smoking should be avoided.

– Oral hygiene should be observed.

– Behaviors that can create pressure such as sneezing should be avoided. The mouth should be open when sneezing. This should be avoided as closing the mouth will create pressure.

– Prescribed medications should be used regularly in accordance with the instructions.

Open sinus lifting technique This technique is applied if the patient’s own bone level is below 4 mm.
